It really depends on what you are looking for.
One big difference is Kindle offers wireless download and over 300,000 of its own books...plus the device speaks to you.
Sony digital reader offers touch screen, just over 160,000 of its own books, LED lighting, and virtual keyboard.
So you really have to look at the individual features and make the call.
Hope the comparison helps.

If you're in the United States, you should definitely go for the Kindle 2.

I'm a Kindle 2 owner, and I'll recommend you to go for the Kindle 2 for sure. One advantage is that it has free wireless 3G internet access, so you can go to text-based websites like Google or Wikipedia, etc. whenever I like. It also allows me to buy or get books anywhere with the Kindle. Another thing is that the Kindle has the text-to-speech function, which means I can "read" books with my ears, just like listening to music with the ipod... It really helps me to utilize my time, as I can listen to books when I'm on the step machine, doing some housework, etc.

One most important advantage of the Kindle is that Amazon is a much better content provider, and Amazon provides books in Kindle format cheaper than the actual books. It is said that if you buy 70 Kindle books, the money saved on buying books can cover the price of the device already. So it is more beneficial in long term, especially you're an avid reader. I know some sony reader owners complaint that it is sometimes quite difficult to find books with the sony reader.

Hope it helps you making the decision.
